What distinguishes one golf course from another is often the accumulated results of paying attention to the smallest details.

I manage on expectations and lead by example. I do not require others to    perform tasks that I am unwilling to complete myself.

My agronomic style focuses on firm and fast conditions, while providing    consistent playing surfaces from the first tee to the eighteenth green.

Keys to My Success

COMMUNICATION

It is the most important part of a Superintendent’s job. Regular communication leads to better member service, which to me means “to provide a positive, first-class golfing experience on a daily basis.”

I also employ a variety of communication tools such as emailing course updates to membership and staff, an online blog, weekly staff meetings, monthly newsletter articles, suggestion cards, and playing golf with members.

LEADERSHIP & COACHING

It’s important to be an active listener, and then take time to answer questions and explain why we perform certain tasks. I also focus on creating a team atmosphere and encourage staff to take ownership in their work. The ultimate goal is to get to know each staff member personally and find out what motivates them. In addition, it's important to conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback on ways to improve.

USING AVAILABLE RESOURCES

In regards to operating and capital budgets--I believe it’s not how much you have to spend, it’s how well you spend it. It’s also critical to network with fellow superintendents, vendors, and USGA agronomists to discuss current issues.

Most importantly, I take the time to analyze and improve the operation every year, and I am always open to new techniques and ideas.
